Be-2 Aware Club 2018

One of the club's well wisher writes :
"I spent a lot of time this year to study the top reasons for global warming and what we can do, at an individual capacity, to prevent the problem. Sharing them here with the hope of getting to wish many more happy new years amongst us and not just this year.

Hope you can make a difference by following at least one of these! Wish everyone a happy new year 2019 and beyond."

– Ramesh

Global warming is not only a continuous raise in the earth temperatures, but also causes extreme weather effects such as the spread of mosquito-borne viruses and outbreaks on infectious allergies and asthma. One prediction says that the current population will get eradicated in less than 80-100 years from now. Hope I can influence at least a few more people to practice at least one of the means to reduce global warming.

_Here are the top 3 causes of global warming._ (Don't jump to conclusions by the titles!)
1. Refrigeration & Air-conditioning
2. Wasted food
3. Transportation & Manufacturing

Here is what you can do to help with these 3 causes:

*1. Refrigeration & Air-conditioning:* This one reason contributes to about 31% of the global warming and is the main driver. What is not obvious here is the use of refrigerated food. What can we do?
     - Avoid use of frozen food and refrigerated drinks
     - Be a vegetarian as much as you can, as meat consumes refrigeration for its entire life-cycle
     - Eliminate the 2nd refrigerator in your house, and keep your primary refrigerator only for essentials and not stuff it
     - Avoid ice cubes and cold drinks anywhere
     - Get to drink water at room temperature

*2. Wasted food:* Contributes to about 24% of global warming. This one is largely non-obvious... Producing the food we throw away generates more greenhouse gases than most entire countries do. If food waste were a country, it would be the world's third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, behind the U.S. and China. What can we do?
     - Avoid wasting food at all costs. Do not cook or buy if you are unsure of your appetite
     - Be a vegetarian as much as you can, since the effective calorific consumption is almost 100 times and most of it wasted through the life-cycle
     - Cook food, rather than buy food
     - Accept imperfection in appearance of food, since the rejected food is thrown by the merchants
     - Avoid attending or hosting large gatherings or parties, as the wastage multiplies with unpredictable guests

*3. Transportation & Manufacturing:* These cause trapping of heat and gases, and contributes to about 21% of global warming. What can we do?
     - Avoid unwanted travel and most importantly travel for no reason
     - Avoid junk foreign imports - like cheap items that you throw-away (like party balloons, decorations that travel half the world and get consumed only for half a day)
     - Avoid any purchases that you don't even have space for (they travel half the word and sit in a box at your home for another half-year to be opened!)

     - Be local in your shopping!

Rohan Kamath writes a poem on his love for Nature. How tranquil it seems when he sits by the brook and enjoys all that Mother Nature has to offer. Thank you for sharing this Rohan and hope all of you enjoy and appreciate Nature.

By The Brook

Cold breeze tickling my soft chubby cheeks ,

sparrows twittering with their magnificent beaks .

Soothing sounds of the water ,

the sun's rays isn't any hotter .

O yes ,free from all human crooks,

I am on the bank of the very old brook .

The gushing water purifies plants ,

from the smoke produced by our power plants.

Sitting, facing the brook is like being in the ethereal heavens ,

and enjoying a snack of nature’s fare

Colorful celestial butterflies flying high in the air ,

lions enjoying life in their lair.

Yellow ducks hustling through the water ,

almost similar to the world of Harry Potter .

Present here are the green pointy grass ,

there's no sound of polluting cars .

Splashing sounds of muffled oars

which give a feeling of the best folk lore .

As the golden sun sleeps among the hills,

scary beasts come out of their dens

But , the sober crescent moon and it's constellation of stars arise ,

to create for nature, the world's best prize!

Save nature!

Amaey Advait of class 7 has penned a beautiful poem titled "I am a Tree".He is an active member of the club and this poem reflects his empathy towards trees in a thought provoking manner.Thank you Amaey and may your love towards Nature grow stronger.

I am a Tree                                                                                                                                                  - Amaey Advait
There was once a time when the Earth was at its best,
And that was the time when the Mother Nature was allowed to rest.
The world was filled with grass and trees,
And bats and rats and lions and bees.
But soon came the wrath of man,
Who listened to no one and nothing, not even the great God Pan.
I, as a tree, have seen man for long,
And know that he has been doing wrong.
My name is Roots,
I bear many fruits.
I reside near the amphitheatre of Sri Kumaran Children’s Home,
Standing big and wide and tall and proud.
I am the sole survivor of a large family,
Which was happy and free.
But this is a nice school,
Idhar tension karna bhool!
Reforestation and afforestation is cool,
All these are practiced by this school.
The children look at me like a hero,
And that makes me forget my sorrow.
My friends – “One Flower” and “Brancher”
Are my best friends forever.
They teach me more about wrong and right,
And whisper loudly in the night.
So that’s my life’s wonderful story,
Tell me who would you like to be?
A big, cruel woodcutter,
Or a nice, caring tree-doctor.
What you choose is important to me,
‘Cause, I am a tree.

(Amaey Advait is a 12-year-old lively boy who dreams of becoming a poet and tries his best to achieve it.)

Nikhita Purohit of class 7D has shared a very useful information on alternatives to plastics.Thank you Nikhita and do continue to look at eco - friendly options :)

OOHO

These edible water blobs are called ‘ Ooho ‘. They are green alternatives to plastic. They are made from seaweed which is cheaper than plastic. It has no natural taste, but creaters say that colour and flavour can be added. They have covers that are biodegradable, which make them ecofriendly to use. It was created by Skipping Rocks Lab, and their goal is to create waste free packaging, and stop 1 billion plastic bottles reaching the ocean each year. Some scientists have said that every year, at least 100 million marine animals are killed due to plastic pollution. Ooho can prevent this from happening. The blobs have been sold around London, but the creaters hope to take them global.

‘I AM NOT PLASTIC’ BAGS

These ‘plastic bags’ dissolve in water, and you can even drink them!!! They are made from a substance called cassava starch. Every year, millions of plastic bags pollute the seas and oceans. Marine wildlife dies due to choking of plastic bags. These ‘I am not plastic’ bags, are made to prevent this from happening. Oral Toxity tests have proven that it’s safe for animals to consume.

SEABIN

This bin collects garbage from the sea. The ‘Sea bin’ has a pump that creates a flow of water. The pump is the one that brings rubbish into the bin. The garbage is caught in the bag, allowing water to flow out back to sea. It’s designed to be near ports, marinas and yacht clubs. The company sea bin, say they’ve never had fish caught up in the bin, and this was said after 4 years of testing. The sea bin is being trialed at various ports across Europe, it will then become a commercial product. Also the bins themselves are made from recycled plastic.

Samiksha of class 7B shares photos of her trip to Mudumali, a National Park.

Located on the northwestern side of the Nilgiri Hills, the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, which shares its border with Karnataka and Kerala, is as an important wildlife corridor.

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is a safe refuge for the largest land mammal on earth, the elephant. Gaur are also found in large numbers. Both cross over to and from Bandipur and large herds are easily seen. Splendid specimens of chital and sambar complete the picture of paradise in which the tiger also roams.

Thank you for sharing these photos - it shows your love for Nature.Photography is a good hobby to document, observe and appreciate Nature.

Samiksha of class 7B did her bit towards environmental day celebrations!Keep it up Samiksha!!

"We were told in our class to write a summary observing different types of plants that are grown around our house. So I took few pictures of the plants on environmental day. The plants were planted as saplings in the apartment like hibiscus, Rock Banana(kalvali) including different types of trees. As part of environmental day celebration we also planted few more medicinal and herbal plants like Thulasi, Oregano etc." -Samiksha – class 7B

BE- 2 AWARE CLUB 2014

Upcycling

Ishaani of class 7D has upcycled her old jeans to create beautiful and functional products. These are the photos she has shared :

On the day of the IT Fair(Oct 18,2014),Pooja S Desai of class IX ,a Be2 Aware Club Member wanted to spread awareness about bursting of crackers during Diwali. She spoke to many parents and students. Here is a write-up on what she spoke:
“As fun and exciting Diwali might be for all of you, there is more than 25% of the population that suffers from the effects of the fumes that are released during this festival.
Imagine choking and gasping for breath for every gulp of air that you try to take in to relieve yourself making your condition worse than before – this is what a patient suffering from respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis suffer from during this festival.
While you may be having a blast this Diwali, your pet is likely to be horrified by the noise and sparks. Dogs have extremely sensitive ears. A cracker that makes the smallest sound is likely to be an explosive grenade for them.  Dogs try to flee and go to safer places only to get hit by cars and crackers tied around their tails. They try to hide in drains but end up getting washed away. They suffer from cardiac arrests, loss of appetite, stress etc. Birds also fall of from trees due to the sudden shocks.
It is a traumatizing festival for senior citizens, infants, those who are unwell. Many children turn deaf and blind. Does it not say in our constitution that child labour is illegal? However, hundreds of children are used to make these explosives. At a tender age, they are exposed to harmful chemicals, burns and loss of eyesight.
Diwali is a festival of lights not sound. It is a festival of joy not misery. It is important to raise consciousness among  people regarding safe and environment friendly celebrations.”

Being the student of this club, I have realised what it is to appreciate nature. nature, the gift of mother earth is something which is very precious but we the humans don’t value it. I think i have witnessed a great opportunity of being in this school and getting an opportunity to be a part of this club.
I hope i am included in things like every year, and thank all the teachers for making my year wonderful. i loved the nature walk class the most and even the video sessions were really appreciative.

Be2 aware club was a fun, intresting, nice and eye opening experience. I learnt that our unique Earth is getting polluted. I learnt about the ways our Earth is getting polluted and what the government and people are doing against it. In the activities, we learnt about making articles for our everyday use with bio-degradable stuff and therefore not polluting the environment. I liked BE 2 aware a lot.

My experience in the BE2 Aware club was good. I lerant a lot about the nature around us. We learnt about many new species of plants which are present in the wild. We  had a lot of extra activities in this club. For example: we went to bimba hut, lalbagh and a forest walk in the forest near are school. I didn’t know that we colud make bags out of cloth and gift wrapping with cloth and paper. We got to know how to save the nature with out polluting it. I had a great time in this club.

B2 AWARE  has been a really nice experience  for me.
The teachers of the b2 aware club showed us videos of zen style of eating food with a napkin,a spoon and a box.
They also told us not to litter and we have been following the same.
We also went for an early morning forest walk with madhu sir on a wednesday.
He showed us all exotic plants and wasp nests. That was a really exciting visit to the forest.
I hope we have b2 aware in class 8,9 and 10 as it was a joyful experience for everyone!!!!!

Nature plays an important role in our lives .Every day we depend on nature. In B2aware club we learnt to respect nature and to take care of it. My friends and I were very exited in our first class. We had a lot of fun. We learnt slokas , activities to preserve nature. We tried our best to conserve nature. What I liked about the club was that we  conserved nature. I will always try to conserve nature. Madhav of 7E
i am proud to tell i am a be2 aware member. It was a very interesting class i enjoyed it.i liked the class when we go out around the school. i can understand why we have to save nature.lalbhag was  very good.on the whole i had fun.thank you for keeping  this class

Be2aware has been really great!!
We had a lot of fun in each and every class and activity.
The one thing, that put me off was that though we are environmentalists,  we haven’t had a class in which we sowed plants. However this club has made me greener.
I no longer let anyone in my bus throw a thing out of the window. No longer can a person uproot a sapling in front of my eyes.
And now my family too has started to go green by opting a jute carry bag or no carry bag at all.
Also my friends have started to recycle, and try their hand on vegetable farming too!
All this happened because of Be2aware. I’m greatful to the teachers for organising this club and hope that they do so again and again! I’m really keen on joining the nature clubs next year in the senior block.
All the activities be it Furoshiki, painting with natural colors, eating in Zen style, or even the songs and shlokas, they all are going to remain in my heart forever  and ever…
Thank you  for this great experience!

We went lalbagh which I enjoyed a lot as we learnt a lot about the different types of birds, trees, fruits & plants. All this helped me to spread awareness about nature to people in my neighborhood,i enjoyed this experience a lot.

Be2Aware was an interesting club.We learnt how precious our Earth was and the different ways to save it.We reused many waste substances and made things like coasters out of jute ropes. The Hobby day was the best where we played instruments while some people sang and some danced. The best was the whole of hobby day was just about nature. The dance was about nature and the song was a bengali song by Rabindranath Tagore.I would like to thank Jayanthi maam, Suchitra maam and Nagarathna maam for giving me this thought that we should save the Earth.

I felt so happy this year for this was the first time we ever got to bond with nature so lovingly. We got a chance to escape the concrete jungle and have fun. The activities which I liked the most were the Vedas class for they purified my mind, the nature walk for this helped me understand natures pain and gains.

This club helped me bond with nature
It lit my way
And helped me become more mature
and not allowing me to go astray

It told me that nature
is just not on trees
it also includes
fruits and bees

We learnt how to
live in peace
and harmony
and not to tease

It taught me how to
lead my life
it got rid of my
worries and strife!!

Be2aware club. Be environmentally aware", as the name suggests, aims to make us environmentally aware. Was it successful in it? To me, honestly, I would say yes. Every class made me ponder about it, just before sleeping, I used to think about this class. We learnt the same thing that every group with those initiatives taught us but this time it was way more effective than the others. Why, i can't point out but yes, it did make me take some pretty deep steps. I myself have started checking if the garbage is segregated and disposed proprly in my house. I have been trying to use the furoshiki art of gift wrapping method to gift my friends. And so many more things i can't think about right now but basically i can now relate my life to nature. I can appretiate everything i see! And you and Madhavi ma'am are the only people I can thank for this!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! <3

My Experience at BE2 AWARE Club
My experience in BE2 AWARE Club was a fascinating one. We could take full advantage of the beautiful surroundings at Kumarans CBSE. The lush green forests that surround our school is full of various information. We could learn a lot about it at BE2 AWARE. I really enjoyed making coasters and visiting Lalbagh Gardens. But the one thing I was really hoping to do but we didn’t do was to make paper or cloth bags. These bags could have been really helpful for our daily need and make us use plastic less often. I hope the next batch could be able to do it in class. I regret growing up. I wish we could still be a part of it next year.

Be2aware club was a very nice experience, it being a nature related club. I love nature and this wonderful club helped me connect with nature. :)
All the activities were fantastic and the best one was the Furoshiki (the art of wrapping). I loved the hobby day.
It saddens me that people don't take care of nature. :(

Leaving 7th this year, I'd like to look back and say that this was the best club EVER!
I've an idea:
This year, we got plastic wrappers to wrap our notebooks. They are very harmful to nature and don't ever biodgrade. This year I didn't wrap the books with plastic.
So, in the academic year 2014-2015, please Please don't give us plastic coated or plastic wrappers. Be environament friendly, NO plastic!
Awesome experience
LOVED IT!

I did not know that there could be so many things that we can get from Mother Nature.
We also went to the forest near our school and learnt so many things. We also had a lot of field trips which were also very informative. The best part was the Display Day.There were so many programs about nature , about how people over the world are making efforts to save the earth. It was a wonderful experience that I hope everybody gets to have.

The be2aware club was nice. it was very exciting. Those sessions with Madhu was one of the greatest. All the sessions were amazing. i feel that we everyone should have the be2 aware club as nowadays everyone should be aware of the nature. it was a great experience to be with the club. the one thing i loved the most about the was the forest walk session. it had been like a year since i went into the forest and it was sad that we could not see any birds. i eel this was the best club. even the bimba art and the lalbagh walk was amazing. going with Mr.Ullas and his team to lalbagh was nice. he showed us many things and told us many things like the national aquatic animal which  i thought was Gharial but he told me that it was Gangetic dolphin. it was very nice hearing from few of the people like Ruth and Gutsavo. the club was very nice. thank you mam for giving this club to our class. thank you mam

I think we should have more club classes in a week. Before this club I used to think nature wasn't important.......but now I think that I am a part of it and I should do something to save it.
You have been an awesome teacher and I would like to say a big THANKYOU to you.I will never forget this experience in the rest of my life!

It          was     soooooooooooooooooooooo awesome,awesome,awesome,awesome,awesome,awesome,awesome,awesome....................................................I can’t type anymore.

It has inspired me to take innovations on my aviation venture.i am not joking but i have a thesis Ph.D on it ready on my table.I tried raducing methanol on my aircraft but it was a pretty huge problem.I tried to mix very little methanol to vegetable oil.If it had worked and I won the nobel prize i would surely given it to u.This be2aware has inspired me to name one of my aircrafts in my collection "bamboo in the wind".

I've already written many reports for the club , but just to sum it all up I think that this club was a great eye opener for me towards nature .My mother had sent you a mail, I don't think you recieved it (because it said not sent),but anyway even my  mom felt the club was a great experiece for me.
This report may be short but you have probably read many of my club experiences so thank you for making this club possible  fun and nature filled for us.
I hope that when I go to the senior block I will still be able to contribute to this wonderful club as much as I can!
Thank You Jayanthi Ma'am!

Holiday Fun - Farming in Mysore!

The following is an account of the wonderful time I had in Mysore. We reached Mysore on 14/9/2013 at around 3:30 pm in the afternoon. After relaxing at grandmother's house for an hour or so, we decided to go visit the family farm which is located just outside Mysore. After an eventful journey through the green countryside, we reached the farm at around 5 in the evening. The aspect that makes this farm different from most other farms is that no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used either during planting or during harvesting of the various fruits and vegetables grown there. Modern research reveals the dangers of consuming food grown using inorganic means and warns us of the various negative effects it can have on the body. Therefore, some farmers, like my aunt and uncle have moved away from those methods and are now growing their crops using pure organic fertilizers and natural chemical free practices that ensure a healthy, tasty and clean produce. My uncle and aunt had decided to plant 150 saplings on that day and I was lucky enough to be there that day. I was involved in the whole process right from the beginning to end and was amazed at the effort and patience that farmers had to invest to grow their crops. The produce grown at our farm is sold to a shop in Mysore that specializes in naturally grown, pesticide free organic produce. A lot of people shop their regularly and they all attested to the virtues of eating organic food. I had a lot of fun and I also learnt a lot during this visit and I can’t wait to visit them again next summer.

Thoughts on "Rabindra Sangeet" session by Deeksha Suresh,Class 7B

Wow! Today was awesome! We all went to an open place in our school and sat on the grass.
When we settled, ma'am handed out sheets to us. It had 3 paragraphs. It had funny words. I had no idea what it was!
I wondered what it could be....I thought Madhavi ma'am had opened Microsoft Word and jumbles words and we had to un-jumble them.
Wait a second...How is that related to nature? My doubts were cleared when ma'am said these were poems written by Rabindranath Tagore.
It made sense now. These were Bengali poems.(Rabindra Geetha) Ma'm told us a story about him- In those olden days, there was a lot of  discrimination. In Rabindranath Tagore's family, he was the darkest complexioned of all his siblings,so he was discriminated. But his elder sister used to say  that he would one day outshine all of them. How true! Then our seniors Samhita and Nitya taught us those poems. They were fantastic!
Even though i couldn't understand what it meant,I could make out it was related to nature. Samhita and Nitya did a good job teaching those poems  to us in the proper, perfect tune. Instead of other bollywood songs, the tune of these poems stayed in my mind for a long time.
It is sure a day to remember!

 Tablets Our Earth Savers
Hello,
We are from the Be2 Aware club (class 7 E). We wanted to share some information on how many trees are cut down for making books. We took 7th standard (2013-2014), approximately there are 230 students in seventh. Only for notebooks 57,544 trees are cut down & this does not include textbooks & workbooks. Imagine 57,544 * 12 standards * 50+ years. Even if one person plants 1 tree it’s not going to be enough. No way. No, we are not telling you to scrape your knees and dig the ground to plant 30 trees or something, (though we really wouldn’t mind). All we are trying to say is every year our book’s fee’s is Rs.4000. If everyone bought 1 Aakash tablet worth Rs.3000 for the remaining years then imagine the number of tree’s we’ll save. Not only would earth be greener it’ll also save money & our back. Studies show that many students have back pain due to heavy bags. Tablets are portable & light, and we are not asking the teacher’s to let us write our exam’s in the tablets. We hope this article opens your eyes & you shall take action. After all we lead India, we will be the change. And if we don’t stop cutting trees ,who will?

The first session of Be-2 Aware club had interesting comments from students.

"When you see Nature, you feel calm and serene" -Keshav
"Only pigeons are seen commonly these days"
"Forests are being destroyed and animals are forced to enter urban spaces"-Rishith C
"I feel sad and hope to do something about preserving nature"

Aug 8,2012 - Session on Ms.Stefanie Silbermann's eco art works elicited the following responses from students :

Today we saw Stefanie’s art journal – the pictures are really beautiful. Without even meeting her,I understand that she is environmentally friendly! -Aradhana

We can’t spoil the divine beauty of nature. If we don’t save the world,it will become black and white.
We spoil the homes of many animals also which we should not. We can use biodegradable things like bamboo to make things instead of metal, plastic etc. – Agnibha

Today we saw a powerpoint presentation on nature art by a German Nature Artist – Stefanie Silbermann,it was about Nature’s art and pictures she took when she was making the structures for the Indo German Mela. - Rishit C

Ms.Stefanie is encouraged by nature and links nature with art in beautiful ways. She has encouraged us to protect, care for and love nature with our heart.I was very inspired and encouraged and would like to work with nature so closely someday. – Vivek A

I think the presentation on Ms.Steffi’s art works was really nice.I never knew that Nature can be so beautiful and colourful, the green hues of trees, the blue and orange sky fascinate me .Natural things done by Ms.Steffi and her pictures were very beautiful.I loved it and I can say that India was like this before roads and buildings came. – Atmaj V

Today we saw a beautiful powerpoint presentation about nature which was very nice. The German artist makes so many things out of nature. She has used natural colours, threads to tie it together.Even I love art but never thought about using natural things.I liked the message she gave us and even I want to be like her and conserve nature and use it resourcefully. – Nidhi A

We have to do everything the eco way.the art, music, infrastructure should be eco friendly. We have to think twice before cutting one tree.We are missing the environment she experienced. The Village life is lost….. – Nischith S

Stefanie indirectly contacted us by sending us material on her work. She motivated us to continue bringing about awareness on nature. She showed us that we could make natural furniture.I am really motivated and I will continue bringing awareness! - Suhas V

Ms.Steffi has some excellent ideas on art with nature. She has used bamboo to make different kinds of structures. She has tried her best to use natural things. - Tanisha T M

I really like your fabulous ideas of thinking to use bamboo to make art.I appreciate the way you think about not painting the bamboo so that we can feel the texture of it.You have beautifully thought of nature in your art pieces. Please continue and keep up your good work. – Samhitha R N

It was interesting to know that we were known to someone outside the school.Nature is interesting and pretty.Artwork is easy with nature. We can take a lot from nature but we should make sure we give a lot back. – -Janani

  1. People these days only talk about conserving our environment but most of them never really do anything about. I hope we be2aware club members can create an awareness about conserving our environment

  2. I totally agree with you in our apartment we are planning to start campaigning ,we should start that in school too or else it might be too late

  3. I have seen houses that use waste tyre's as one part of the wall as the rubber absorbs heat and does not let the heat enter the house, like this we could use waste material to create innovative things.
Buildings like these are called air-shafts, here is a link where you can see them.

  7. I too like the idea but then the students will think that the school is forcing them into this and they will end up making fun of it.Well.......this is only my opinion...

  8. well,I guess your right but still those who are interested will learn something and hopefully work for a greener environment and well the ones who laugh at things like this I guess there's nothing we can do about them.

  9. As technology advances so do problems start arising. I think one main such problem would be pesticides, I recently saw a tv programme which focused on this. It seems that the state of Sikkhim has taken up an innitiative to become a totally organic {in farming} state and has almost reached its goal.!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Organic Farming awareness has to spread - even in villages, people use pesticides extensively. We need to work with rural folk too on this - after we become more aware of the pros and cons of organic farming!!
