We also received a message from Mr.Gustavo to the Be2 Aware club members:
Hi there! I’m Gustavo and Frugal Science is about helping you rediscover your exploring nature and enjoying the benefits of looking at life in a different way. Anybody can become a true explorer –it’s our nature-, all you need is a mindful attention and some frugal science.
I’m from Ecuador, South America. I have been working among mangroves for almost eighteen years now. Everything started as being part of an awareness group – as you are – in my native city Guayaquil. At that time, shrimp aquaculture was growing fast and, as a result of impulse, it was doing nasty stuff to the environment like cutting down mangroves and messing with the water quality. My job (and my friends’) was to create awareness doing the simplest things: small posters, music concerts and stuff.
The years passed, and when we thought our efforts were meaningless, things began to change. All of a sudden, I was working as a technical advisor to implement good environmental practices in those shrimp farms that were interested in protecting the environment.
Today, things have changed. There are still some shrimp farms making things the wrong way but they are a minority, and the government is enforcing very strict laws to protect the wilderness. As for me, as a result of eighteen years of working with shrimp farms, I decided to buy my own. Now, I am a mangrove caring shrimp farmer.
